Governments from the euro currency bloc are due to discuss strategic objectives for the CBDC later Monday.

Transfers in stores and to governments could take longer to develop, but basic personal use should be free, the European Central Bank said.

Some observers have touted restrictions on how people can spend their money as an advantage of a central bank digital currency.

Eurogroup, the body comprised of European finance ministers, said that introduction of a digital euro requires political decisions that should be discussed and taken at the political level.
